Meet the Employee: Leigh Sissons, Business Development Manager

Tell us all about you as a person outside of work, your hobbies and interests

Football is my main hobby. Since I stopped playing, I’ve turned my hand to coaching. I coach an under 18s and an under 19s team locally. I am also a big Nottingham Forest fan and will try and go to the games when I can. Come on you reds!

What is your role within Parcelhub (and the wider Whistl Group)?

I am currently a Business Development Manager at Parcelhub and have been since I started 5 years ago. Before that I worked for TNT as an Account Manager for 3 years. My first job when I left university was as an Estate Agent in Nottingham City Centre. I did that for around 4-5 years before going to TNT.

What does a typical day look like for you at Parcelhub?

Well it’s changed a lot since Covid. I used to be on the road visiting new and old customers 4 out of 5 days and be in the office one day to catch up on admin. I now spend most of my week working from home and visiting customers as and when I need to. Times have changed and I seem to find myself on Teams calls more often than not. I definitely miss the face-to-face meetings.

Food Circle Supermarket were one of Leigh’s first customers at Parcelhub. In the last 3 years they have grown to shipping hundreds of items daily.

As Business Development Manager, what made you want to work for Parcelhub and what were you doing before this?

Parcelhub is very different to my previous employer. It’s a smaller business in terms of workforce and I like the fact that if I need to speak to another department such as customer service, Accounts, or Finance, I can do so at the touch of a button, which allows us to get answers quicker. At Parcelhub you are a name, rather than just a number. I also like that I am able to offer multiple carriers. Our customers and their customers want options and choices. We can give them just that. It’s not very often we cannot help in some way.

Do you have any advice for others wanting to get into eCommerce logistics

Do it! The world of eCommerce and logistics has gone crazy, especially since Covid with the increase in online activity. Don’t get me wrong, its sales, some days can be tough and slow, but the majority its fast-paced and fun.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you

I met my wife back when I worked at the estate agent. Relationships weren’t really ‘encouraged’ in the office so we spent the first year and half keeping it a secret whilst still working together. We used to arrive together most mornings and leave together and nobody said a word. It all came out when we both needed the same time off for a holiday.

What excites you most about working for Parcelhub?

Parcelhub as a whole is in quite an exciting period. We have big plans to keep growing and expanding. I like that each day is different, One minute I am speaking to brand new startup with big plans and the next I’m speaking to a company who has been trading for 20 odd years and Parcelhub has been instrumental in their growth.

Leigh is Business Development Manager for Leicestershire, Rutland and North Northamptonshire and is responsible for driving the growth of Parcelhub’s new depot at Meridian Business Park.

What has been your proudest achievement working for Parcelhub?

My 2021 performance is something I am very proud of. I exceeded my overall target by 59%. Each year seems to get better and better.

How would you like to progress your career going forward, what are your long term goals inside and outside of work?

I would like to progress into a leadership position at some point but also enjoy what I currently do. You are a long time working so I think it’s important you have that work/life balance and happiness in what you do. Outside of work I would like to push my football coaching a little further and see where it takes me.

What has been your greatest achievement outside of work?

Probably my two children, Olivia (5) and Noah (8 months). Watching them grow and learn new things is amazing. Olivia is at such a good age with learning to read and write as well as learning new hobbies is amazing to watch. Can’t wait for Noah to be at an age where he can play football and run around causing chaos.
